“We have known for a long time that there are significant vulnerabilities, and that these vulnerabilities are going to accelerate as time goes by, both in systems within government and within the private sector.” This was the message from President Obama, speaking on 8 June at the Group of Seven summit meeting in Germany. Part of the US problem is that the country has “very old systems,” Obama said, adding that the recent breach was discovered because of efforts to install newer and better systems. “Both state and non-state actors are sending everything they’ve got at trying to breach these systems,” he said. The massive hack on the US Office of Personnel Management is a timely reminder of the need for good cyber security. The UK government has invested significantly in cyber security over the last five years, building partnerships with academia and industry. But much work remains to enhance cyber awareness and skills across the country, in government, business and wider society.
