What was hard?
I struggled with procrastination a few times this week, perhaps accentuated by prospect of continued home working stretching out ahead of me. There are some things on my to-do list that I meant to get done in the working time between Christmas and New Year, didn’t quite get to them, and now other stuff keeps popping in ahead of them in my priorities. I should stop and think why I have a block against these particular tasks. Or just get them out of the way anyway.
What did you enjoy?
There was a team stand-up where everything clicked and I saw the team working as a team, and less as a collection of individuals who happen to share a Trello board. I hope we’ll be able to keep that going, and help each other out from day to day, especially as every team member has different pressures and outside commitments to navigate.
What did you learn?
I was reminded of the awesome power of a small team of experienced professionals when they’re able to give their undivided focus to an issue for a couple of weeks. My worry is that creating the space for this to happen is still really hard, and that not everyone has experienced what it’s like to be part of a high-performing team. Until you’ve been part of it, it’s hard to imagine just what might be possible.

This week I had cause to question an all-male panel to which I had been invited. I’m pleased to say the organiser accepted my suggestion of adding a female colleague to the line-up, and the (very well-qualified) colleague agreed to take part at ridiculously short notice. The panel went ahead. It wasn’t a manel. And it was much better for that.
